Matthew 4

Series All Eyes on Jesus

Sermon Recap

  • Pastor Sara talked about Jesus’ time in the wilderness as a time where Jesus experienced the challenge of hunger and loneliness and sleepless nights.
  • However, in the midst of this challenge and testing, Jesus did what humans across history had been unable to consistently do. He chose to trust God and remain faithful.
  • We now get to lean on the faithfulness of Jesus so that we do not have shame when we fail to accomplish perfect faithfulness.
  • She also talked about how the wilderness spaces in scripture are also an invitation and opportunity for transformation and deeper relationship with God.

Reflection Questions:

  • If you could do anything knowing that you wouldn’t fail, what would you do?
  • Have you had a season in your life that you would identify as a wilderness? Looking back, can you identify ways that you grew in that space?
  • Henri Nouwen writes, “We have to fashion our own desert where we can withdraw every day, shake off our compulsions, and dwell in the gentle healing presence of our Lord.  Without such a desert we will lose our own soul while preaching the gospel to others.  But with such a spiritual abode, we will become increasingly conformed to him in whose Name we minister.” Is there a way you can “fashion your own desert” in the next few weeks to create space to engage with God?
